Degrading Halloween costumes--why not?
Welcome October and with that of course the preparation for Halloween. This year my goal if to put together a costume that is original and unique and not store-bought. So I am starting early, getting ideas and thinking about how to make my costume. Scrolling through costume websites, I am reminded of what Halloween really means to most people--the opportunity to dress up like a complete whore and not feel dirty about it. What is with most girls using Halloween as an excuse to dress up like a skank? It's Halloween, it's supposed to be scary or funny but when did sexy really get its own category? I remember the Playboy bunny and the French maid, even the female cop (as degrading as that is...what women have to have a "sexy" outfit when it comes to being a cop? They can't just dress up like one? It's got to be a "sexy" one?)
But recently I've seen, the naughty Raggedy Anne doll costume, the slut Rainbow Brite, the playful and whorish referee, the raunchy overexposed busy Bee (seriously, it's a Bee costume that's high-cut in the leg and low-cut in the breasts) and somehow they managed to pull this one off in the sweatshops in China--the sexy Scarecrow. So I ask you people, what are we perpetuating here? If we--as women--choose to wear costumes that really bring us back a few hundred years. Why not encourage your man to wear a Caveman outfit, holding your hair in one hand, and a beer and club in the other?
What we wear is our first impression to the outside world. Some people over-compensate in their attire to come off looking like a success. Others don't give a shit and that tells a lot about their goals in life. Dressing up, albeit once a year, reflects more to us that just a fun and innocent night. Why do so many women feel the need to dress up like whores for a day? What's the fascination with showing off your body? It's almost become unacceptable in our society to look sexy and be respected....not like it ever was. How can you wear a skirt that shoes off your long, lean, muscular legs and still expect to demand the same level of respect as if you wore a pant-suit--you can't. So we use this one day of the year, to let loose, and jokingly allow our bodies to be ogled and gaped at from every angle; and we relish in the attention, in the sheer power and control of showing off our bodies and relishing in the attention.
So what's wrong with our society--still repressing sexuality to the point that it's considered dirty, yet allowing it to be commonplace during Halloween? I don't know. On one hand we are more than just tits and ass, but on the other we have these beautiful body parts that often times go unnoticed because we try so hard to hide them so our brains and sense of control and power can come through.
We are cursed with the double entendre of what it means to be a woman. We are working women, we've long since been able to use the shoulder-pads of the 80s as our stepping stone into the future. We are mothers, teachers, office-workers, doctors, CEOs, truck drivers, strippers, designers, architects, soldiers, politicians, writers, chefs, bartenders, business-owners; there is nothing we are incapable of doing. And so with Halloween being a few weeks away, and women scurrying for ideas, I encourage one thing--being in control. You don't want to explain yourself for the desire to be sexy--use Halloween as your mask. Wear what you want and feel great about it. Have fun and enjoy the one day when your sexuality will bring a smile and shrug to the faces of strangers.
